11/30/2023 0 Comments I quit my job today without notice![]() I'm just struggling with guilt and the memory of my manager telling me I was screwing them over. Now all I can think about it how badly I screwed over my co workers as I totally forgot the GM was out on vacation and they were short already due to that. This was probably the better option instead of walking out mid shift cussing and yelling or even giving into those self harm behaviors. Mentally I think I wouldn't have handled even another week, I was already thinking about drinking, cutting myself, and even suicidal ideation to numb the pain and stress of the job. I was actually going to give my two weeks but yesterday one of the other managers texted me off the clock a long paragraph of things I did wrong that he didn't even mention in person before which kinda was the last straw. ![]() However it's part of why I'm leaving, the work environment has been so stressful and toxic, and I always felt like I was going to leave them short staffed no matter the day I chose to leave. My manager just berated me and I feel horrible. What was supposed to be a final day at my fast food job with a satisfying exit turned into a shameful sulk away. But after the war ended, people around the world were fascinated by maps of the treaty negotiations. Most of these maps were never seen by civilians. Several maps in the gallery depict the war at sea, including British intelligence maps of efforts to track a notorious German raiding vessel and keep their own harbors free of German mines. Although military subs date back to the American Revolutionary War, the Germans’ widespread use of U-boats to attack civilian and commercial vessels was unprecedented. A junior officer would already know the position of his own troops, so there was no need to put that on a map that could be captured by the enemy.Īnother new technology put to deadly use in WWI was the submarine. But maps given to junior officers showed only enemy troop locations, Moore says. At the highest levels of command, the positions of friendly and enemy troops alike would be depicted (see above). ![]() Both sides dug elaborate networks of trenches to protect their men and enable them to hold a line. ![]() In the meantime, of course, the enemy would be on the move again. It’s no work of art, but it represents a remarkable step in the evolution of warfare. The gridded map below, which shows the effective range of different types of artillery pieces, is an example of the type used by spotters and gunners to coordinate artillery fire. “Someone would actually be running back and forth through the shell fire to communicate the messages,” Moore says. Instead, both sides used cable telephone lines-and human runners when the lines got cut by enemy fire. Radios had been invented by that point, but they were still too bulky to be widely used in the field. One approach was to use spotters, who’d take up a vantage point on a hill or other elevated area and send messages back to the gunners about where their shots were landing. But this created a new challenge: how to aim at a target that’s not directly visible. By WWI that had changed, thanks to powerful artillery that could fire well beyond the line of sight. Throughout most of human history, people could only take aim at an enemy they could see. Many of the maps, which come from the Library of Congress, were featured in a recent paper and two blog posts by Ryan Moore, a cartographic specialist at the library with an interest in military history. The maps in the gallery at the top of this post illustrate these deadly innovations and other defining features of the war, including the complex networks of trenches dug by both sides and the devastating German U-boat attacks on Allied commercial ships-a major factor in drawing the U.S. Airplanes-another relatively recent invention-allowed both sides to update their maps daily with the positions of enemy troops. Recent cartographic innovations allowed artillery gunners to fire at targets they couldn’t directly see and aim their guns without first firing “ranging shots” that would ruin the element of surprise. It was to become one of the deadliest wars in human history, claiming more than 15 million lives.Īdvances in military technology-including more lethal artillery and rapid-fire machine guns- contributed to the heavy toll. By the time the United States entered World War I, 100 years ago today, the conflict had been raging in Europe for nearly three years. ![]() 11/30/2023 0 Comments Turnon speech to text in google docs![]() Note that you need to have the dictation option enabled on your keyboard before you will be able to use the voice typing feature for Google Docs. 11/30/2023 0 Comments Venture capital analyst salary![]() ![]() Chances are, if they are hiring fresh MBAs, then they may also be amenable to hiring PhDs. This information is usually readily available on the business school’s website under something along the lines of “career placement” or “placement statistics”. Usually a quick look at the firm’s website will reveal the type of internal structure that is in place.Ī good idea for an initial search of who is currently looking to expand their firm may be to look at which firms are hiring at the more prestigious business schools (Harvard, Stanford, etc.). Those with a PhD will generally be considered for the MBA-level positions, which in most cases is the associate position. ![]() Some firms have no junior employees (non-partners), while others will have a structure that is similar to investment banks (the analyst to associate to VP to partner paradigm). PhDs will likely be more in demand in these early-stage focused firms since someone will need to be able to analyze and understand these new technologies in order to determine the potential market demand.ĭetermining the proper entry point can be a bit of a difficult process in venture capital since the internal structure can vary from firm to firm. Early-stage investment focused firms are looking at companies that are newly forming and may be focused on developing a new service or technology, so they will be much more receptive to candidates with a specific technical expertise. These firms tend to be more focused on business problems that are leading to a company underperforming and will look for candidates with financial expertise more than an expertise in a technical field. Late-stage investment focused firms are looking at opportunities to invest in undervalued companies that are already established to some degree and are already producing some sort of product or service. Most firms also expect some level of previous experience that would give you some insight into what works and doesn’t work in an entrepreneurial venture (e.g., having started your own company or worked in some other “big picture” role like business development or management consulting.) The industry is generally divided into two categories: late-stage and early-stage focused investments. The first factor working against you is the simple fact that venture capital firms tend to be fairly small while demand for positions is very high therefore there is a lot of competition should an employment opportunity present itself. That being said, positions within venture capital are notoriously difficult to obtain. It can be a very rewarding career path, both financially (if you are able to choose the right investments), and personally in that you will be able to have your hand in creating and developing successful organizations. While there is a lot riding on each individual investment, you are able to take a stake in multiple new ventures, which allows for some risk mitigation. Working in venture capital offers the unique opportunity to operate in an entrepreneurial environment while not being tied down to the success of one company or technology. ![]() 11/29/2023 0 Comments Best online garden planner![]() ![]() Wilcox Nursery is all about making it easy to create "quality landscapes that conserve water, protect the environment, are adaptable to local conditions, and are drought tolerant."
